Bingo - scheduled at least three dates per month, Tuesday nights in the Assembly Room, offers bingo for money prizes contributed by the players in attendance and special items from the Activities Department.
Bridge - New residents are welcome to play as new tables are added to accommodate all interested players. Presently, play occurs 4 days per week in the third floor lounge. New players may try out as subs until a regular seat becomes available.
Cable TV - 44 channels offered.
Channel 2 - The Virginian maintains an in-house television broadcast channel which offers an expanding program of movies, travel videos, and The Virginian Channel 2 News & Features Show. Resident volunteers and staff are partners in the ongoing enhancement of Channel 2 programming.
Church Services - A variety of denominations conduct regular services at The Virginian. This includes Catholic mass and communion, plus Presbyterian communion, Jewish Sabbath and non-denominational Vespers. Bible studies and scripture readings are also weekly events.
Computer Center - The Computer Center is home to multiple personal computers, a scanner, oversized monitors and e-mail access. Classes for beginners and more advanced users are staffed by community and resident volunteers. Classic photo restoration is also available.
Community Service - Resident volunteers accept the challenge to serve their neighbors in need. Special events, such as ‘Home with Heart Day’, are held to raise funds for local charities. In addition, projects have been organized to promote MADD, hurricane relief, Aid to Dependent Children, and others.
Educational Seminars - The Virginian serves as an off-site campus for the Lifetime Learning Institute (LLI), the continuing education for seniors group associated with Northern Virginia Community College. Classes on the American Indian, Living Wills, and Politics in the Movies have been presented. Additional courses will continue to be offered to all residents and LLI members of the local community.
Entertainment - Professional entertainers, such as singers, musicians, variety acts, and theatrical presentations, appear regularly at The Virginian.
Exercise - Daily low impact exercise is offered via a ½hour videotape. Twice weekly, a ½hour, live high exertion class is led by The Virginian’s rehabilitation specialist. Chair exercises, balance, stretching, tai chi, and senior aerobics are only a few of the exercise programs offered daily.
Foreign Language Classes - Resident-led groups meet weekly to practice French and Spanish.
Great Books - Residents register in advance for the twice-monthly discussion group based on the Great Books series.
Guest Speaker Series - Healthcare, finances, literature, politics, personal safety and entertainment represent the key topics in a variety of fields that have been covered at The Virginian. Needs of the resident population are the driving force in scheduling speakers.
Movies - The Virginian in-house closed circuit broadcast channel features film classics and films newly released to DVD/Video. Movies are shown twice daily, seven days per week.
Museum / Monuments - Regular ventures throughout the Washington, D.C. area for sightseeing or special exhibitions are frequently offered. This has included Degas and Van Gogh art exhibits, and tours of all local monuments such as the World War II Memorial, FDR Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Woodrow Wilson Home, and Woodlawn.
Senior Splash - Aquatic exercise programs, under the supervision of The Virginian Rehabilitation Department, are periodically offered at nearby Oak Marr Recreation Center.
Slide Shows - Resident and community volunteers present travel shows of sites around the United States and the world. These talented photographers also provide excellent commentary about their travels.
Theater / Performing Arts - Appealing to a broad range of resident interests, past and future dates include: San Francisco Ballet, Eleanor: A Love Story, “Titanic”, “Riverdance”, and performances by the National Symphony Orchestra.
