Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC)?
As a CCRC, The Virginian offers a carefree lifestyle in Independent Living and Assisted Living, while providing nursing care on a temporary or permanent basis in the Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. This continuum of care is unique to a CCRC, offering lifetime residence and nursing care all under one roof.

Who owns The Virginian?
Established in 1980, The Virginian is a private, not-for-profit, non-denominational community that is operated by The Temple Foundation. The Temple Foundation is incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a charitable public service organization.

How many apartments are in The Virginian?
Is there a waiting list?

There are 217 apartments in Independent Living and 63 apartments in the Assisted Living Centers. For availability, Please call 703-385-0555 to speak with a representative in the Marketing Department.

Are residents required to "buy into" the community?
No. The Virginian offers a Monthly Rental Plan and a Life Care Plan. The Monthly Rental Plan offers the flexibility of month-to-month rental and is available to persons applying for Independent Living or Assisted Living. When more care is needed, residents with the Monthly Rental Plan resubmit an updated application for approval into the next level of care.

Under the Life Care Plan, our residents pay an "entrance fee." Unique to a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), Life Care is a long-term health insurance plan. The Life Care Plan reduces the monthly maintenance fee and provides other benefits across the care continuum. A Marketing Representative can explain the program in further detail.

Can you tell me about the residents who live here?
The Virginian's residents represent a variety of occupations, religions and interests. The Association of Virginian Residents (AVR) meets regularly to discuss and convey new ideas from the residents to the staff and management.

What is included in the monthly fee for Independent Living? For Assisted Living?
For our Independent Living residents, two full meals daily (breakfast, lunch or a four-course dinner), weekly housekeeping service, all utilities (with the exception of telephone service), emergency call system with 24-hour nursing response, full range of in-house activities, and group transportation are included in the monthly fee.
